Archuleta Federal Custody Scope
No federal prison or ICE detention facility physically located in Archuleta County was identified in the official local sources reviewed. That does not remove federal custody from the release search. A person arrested in Archuleta County may have a federal warrant, be moved by the U.S. Marshals Service, be sentenced to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, or be transferred to Immigration and Customs Enforcement after the county case. The Archuleta County Detention Facility record can show the local custody event, but the federal agency controls the later federal release record.
The right lookup path depends on the legal status. BOP is for sentenced federal prisoners. USMS handles federal custody and transport before acquittal, designation to BOP, or other federal release. ICE ODLS is for immigration custody searches within its public scope. Federal court dockets can explain bond, detention, release orders, sentencing, or dismissal. If the only Archuleta record says released to ICE, released to USMS, or federal hold, do not treat that as the end of custody.
| Custody type | Main lookup | Archuleta record role |
|---|---|---|
| Sentenced federal prisoner | BOP Inmate Locator | May show transfer out of county jail. |
| Federal pretrial custody | Federal court and USMS records | May show hold, transport, or release to marshals. |
| Immigration detention | ICE Online Detainee Locator | May show ICE hold or transfer from local custody. |
| County case only | Sheriff records and state court docket | County jail record is the main release source. |
BOP Federal Release Lookup
The BOP Inmate Locator is the public route for sentenced federal prisoners. BOP says its locator covers federal inmates incarcerated from 1982 to the present. The locator is not a county jail roster, so it should be used only when the person was sentenced federally or otherwise became a BOP prisoner. A person who bonded out of Archuleta County jail on a local case will not become a BOP result merely because the person was once held in the county jail.
BOP's About Federal Inmate Records page explains an important release rule: if the release date is in the past and no facility location is listed, the person was released on that date and is no longer in BOP custody. BOP also warns that the person may still be on another form of supervision or in another correctional system. That warning fits Archuleta County matters because county, state, federal, and immigration records can overlap.
Use this order for BOP release confirmation:
- Search by BOP register number if the number is known from federal court or BOP records.
- Search by name when no number is available, then compare age and other identifiers shown by BOP.
- Read the release date and facility field together, because a past date with no listed facility has a specific BOP meaning.
- Check the federal court docket for sentencing, supervised release, or release-order context.
- Return to the Archuleta sheriff record only to confirm local transfer or local jail custody dates.
The manifest image below comes from the BOP federal inmate records explanation.
The BOP explanation is useful because it gives a federal release-date reading rule that the Archuleta County jail record cannot supply.
ICE Transfer and Release
ICE ODLS is the immigration custody locator. ICE's locator page says it is for locating a detainee currently in ICE custody or someone in CBP custody for more than 48 hours. USA.gov says the search can be done by name, country of birth, date of birth, or by the 8- or 9-digit A-number. If an Archuleta jail record says ICE hold or released to ICE, that means the county jail release was a transfer from local custody. It does not confirm release from immigration custody.
Facility Angle K belongs here. The research found an archived 2014 Archuleta County Sheriff's Office directive about ICE detainers and administrative warrants after federal case-law review. Because the directive is older and not hosted on the current sheriff site, it should not be treated as current policy. Its value is narrower: it supports explaining that detainers and administrative warrants are separate custody issues. A person can be done with the county jail case and still move into immigration custody.
- ICE hold
- A custody notice or request tied to immigration enforcement. It must be checked through current official sources.
- A-number
- An immigration identifier used in ICE locator searches when known.
- County transfer
- The county jail release event that sends a person to another agency instead of the community.
USMS and Federal Court
The U.S. Marshals Service does not provide the same public all-person locator as BOP for every federal pretrial prisoner. The research notes that USMS assumes custody of people arrested by federal agencies and is responsible for custody placement and transport until acquittal, BOP incarceration, or another release. Its FOIA page describes files on prisoners in USMS custody. For a federal pretrial matter, the federal court docket, release order, detention order, and counsel or case filings may be more informative than a public custody search.
Archuleta County records still matter at the edge of that path. The sheriff record may show that a person left local custody for USMS, federal hold, or another agency. The state court docket may show no more local custody authority. If the case is federal, the release confirmation shifts to federal court and USMS. If the person later receives a federal sentence, BOP becomes the public sentenced-prisoner locator.
Note: A county jail transfer to USMS is not a BOP release date. BOP usually applies after federal sentencing and designation.
Federal Lookup Contacts
Federal custody serving Archuleta County matters does not have one local public counter. Use the federal system that matches the record. BOP confirms sentenced federal prisoner status and release-date meaning. ICE ODLS checks immigration custody within the locator's public limits. USMS and federal court records explain federal pretrial custody, transport, and release orders. Archuleta County Sheriff's Office records remain useful for the local booking, hold, and transfer event.

Use BOP for the federal sentence path, then use county and court records to explain how the Archuleta custody event connected to that federal case.
Archuleta to Federal Custody
The strongest way to reconcile local and federal records is to keep the timeline in order. Start with the Archuleta County Detention Facility booking or transfer event when the person was held locally. Then read the state or federal court record to see who had legal custody authority. Next, use BOP, ICE, or USMS routes based on the receiving agency. If a release date appears in BOP, compare it with the federal court sentence and any supervision language. If ICE ODLS does not show a result, that does not prove there was no ICE-related transfer from the county jail.
Facility Angle L can matter even in federal searches. Local reporting about Durango inmates being considered for placement at the Archuleta jail shows why the physical jail location is not always the same as the case authority. A person held in the Archuleta building may have an outside agency or outside court controlling release. The arresting agency, court, hold reason, and transfer destination should be checked before deciding which release system is final.
Released or Transferred
Federal and immigration custody make the released-versus-transferred distinction especially important. A county jail line that says released to another agency is a completed Archuleta County jail event, but it is not the same as release to the community. A BOP record with a past release date and no facility has a federal meaning. An ICE record has a separate scope and may depend on current custody and identifier accuracy. A USMS pretrial custody issue may require federal court records rather than a public custody locator.
For Archuleta County released inmates, the safest record route is source-specific: sheriff records for local jail release, court records for orders and sentencing, CDOC for state prison, BOP for sentenced federal prisoners, ICE ODLS for immigration custody, and USMS or federal court for federal pretrial custody. Those systems can point at the same person, but they do not publish the same release record.
